Artist Jeffrey Nemenzo was born in the San Francisco Bay Area
where he attended both the University of San Francisco and
the Academy of Art University. After earning his Bachelor
of Fine Arts Degree, he focused the following few years on
developing his portfolio by exploring different cultures and
subcultures. He started with exploring his own Filipino heritage
and then venturing into other ethnic cultures and lifestyles.
For the past few years, Jeffrey has incorporated urban influences
in his paintings.
From hip hop music,
to graffiti art, to it’s fashion and sneaker culture.
Music also has been an important influence in his artwork
and cites musicians John Coltrane, Kanye West, Q-Tip, Led
Zepplin, M Ward and Radiohead as muses in his iPod. “Music
always gets me into a certain mindset…an attitude that
comes out in my paintings. I have to listen to the right music
for the right painting.”
His
other sources of inspiration are diverse such as Gustav Klimt,
John Singer Sergent, Japanese pop culture, Hatch Show Print,
Kanye West’s blog and photographer Roy DeCarava. The
result is a creation of his own artistic style that is a combination
of iconic, figurative, urban, collages with touches of graphic
elements.
Jeffrey’s work has shown at many places throughout the
Bay Area such as 111 Minna Gallery, PRO Arts gallery, Double
Punch, Mezzanine and Moscone Convention Center as well as
published work in CMYK and Artweek magazine.
